Let the cost of a pen is 'x' and cost of a pencil be 'y'

then, according to question

2x + 3y = 86 ----------------------(1)

4x + y = 112 ------------------------(2)

solving eq(1) and eq(2), we get

y = 12

substituting y =12 in eq(2) , we get

4x = 112 - y

4x = 112 - 12

⇒ 4x = 100

⇒ x = 25

∴ cost of a pen (x) = Rs 25 & cost of a pencil (y) = Rs 12
