This is solved usually by use of the Pythagorean Theorem that says; "The sum of the squares of the two legs in a right triangle is equal to the square of the hypotenuse. From the original position, the men moved 3 ft away from each other (They moved in directly opposite directions as they were standing back-to-back originally. The two distances of 3 ft by each man followed by two distances of 4 ft by each man are two legs of a right triangle formed the movements by each of the two men. The two hypotenuses of the right triangles formed by their movements actually form a straight line segments. So that the distance between them after moving is equal to the lengths of the hypotenuses or, for man no. 1, the hypotenuse is the square root of the quantity: 3 squared plus 4 squared, which is the square root of the quantity: 9+16, or the square root of 25, which is, finally, 5. This value of 5 is the distance of man no. 1 from his starting point. Similarly, the distance man no. 2 fron the starting point is also 5 (computed in the same manner as the first). The final location points of the men and the start point are 3 collinear points. So the sum of the length of the hypotenuses is actually the final distance vetween the two men, that is; 5 ft plus another 5 ft equals 10 ft.
