The matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. It may be solid, liquid, or gas. All the matter around us is not pure. Matter exists in two types. Pure substances and mixtures. A pure substance is one that is made up of only one kind of particles and those are maybe atoms or molecules. Example, sulphur is an element made up of sulphur atoms and therefore we can say that it is a pure substance

All the elements and compounds are pure substances and will be homogenous throughout. A mixture is one which contains two or more different kind of particles or it comprises two or more pure substances mixed together. An example is a salt solution which is a mixture of two pure substances like salt and water. A mixture can be homogenous or heterogeneous. Most of the matter around us exist as mixtures of two or more pure substances.
