Physical properties of metals and non metal are as follow :
Physical State ↴
- Most of the metals are solid at the room temperature, Mercury is the only metal known to occur in liquid state in nature.
- Non metals are generally solid or gaseous. Non metals like sulphur, Phosphorus and carbon are solid. Non metal like hydrogen Oxygen and nitrogen are gaseous. Bromine is only non metal which exist as liquid at room temperature.
Malleability and Brittleness ↴
- The property which allows the metal to be hammered into thin sheets or foils is called Malleability. Most of the metals are malleable.
- The property due to which non metals break up into pieces on hammering is called Brittleness. Non metals are generally brittle.
Ductily (Wires) ↴
- Most of the metals can be drawn into wires. The property which allows the metals to be drawn into wires is called ductility.
- Non metals are not ductile. when streached non metal like sulphur, Phosphorus break into pieces and do not form wire.
Lustre (Shiny appearance) ↴
- Most of the metals are lustrous. They have a shiny surface. This property is called metallic lustre.
- Non metals do not have shiny appearance like matels. They have dull appearance. However, iodine and graphite show some lustre.
