Given :

  • 5 Resistors each of resistance 200 Ω are connected in parallel combination
  • this combination is connected across a 60 V supply, V = 60 V

To find :

  • Current drawn from the supply, I = ?

Knowledge required :

  • Law of combination of resistors in parallel combination

When a number of resistors are connected in parallel combination then the reciprocal of equivalent resistance is equal to the sum of the reciprocals of individual resistances.

1 / R(eq) = 1 / R₁ + 1 / R₂ + 1 / R₃ + 1 / R₄ + .....

  • Ohm's law

      V = I R

[ where V is potential difference, I is current and R is resistance ]

Solution :

Calculating equivalent resistance (R) of the combination

→ 1/R(eq) = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂ + 1/R₃ + 1/R₄ + 1/R₅

since, each resistor is of resistance 200 Ω therefore,

→ 1/R(eq) = 5 ( 1 / 200 )

→ 1/R(eq) = 5 / 200

→ R(eq) = 200 / 5

R(eq) = 40 Ω

Calculating current drawn from the supply

By ohm's law

→ V = I R

→ 60 = I ( 40 )

→ I = 60 / 40

→ I = 6 / 4

I = 1.5 A

therefore,

  • Current drawn from the supply is 1.5 Amperes .
