Step-by-step explanation:

 {2}^{4}  = ( { \sqrt{2} )}^{n - 1}

 {2}^{4}  =  {2}^{  { \frac{1}{2} }^{n - 1} }

 {2}^{4}  =  {2}^{ \frac{n - 1}{2} }

therefore

4 =  \frac{n - 1}{2}

4 \times 2 = n - 1

8 = n - 1

n = 8 + 1

n = 9
