2. Rajan felt worried about the condition of water scarcity in his village during the cropping season. He went to Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare of his area to get the solution of this problem. There he came to know about effective method of irrigation and drought resistant varieties of crop. (3)

He requested the head of department of the ministry to arrange some workshop on this topic to educate the farmers in these methods.

The modern methods of irrigation that help us to use water economically are-

  1. Drip Irrigation System- Drip irrigation is a very common irrigation system these days. In the drip irrigation, we lay plastic pipes in rows near the crops or plants.
  2. Sprinkler System-Sprinkler system resembles same as rain In this system, the perpendicular pipes with rotating nozzles on top are joined to the main pipeline at regular intervals when water is allowed to flow through the main pipe under pressure .

(ii)What are drought resistant varieties of crop?

The drought resistant varieties of crops are-

rice, wheat ,maize and Indian mustard

They are drought resistant as they are varieties tolerant to salt and to alkali soils by the Central Soil Salinity Research Institute in Karnal, India.

(iii)Can you name some crops that require less amount of water?​

Crops that require less amount of water include cool-season legumes like-

peas, lentils and fava beans.

Some crucifer crops include- Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, kale, kohlrabi, mustard, broccoli, turnips and watercress.
