of December day the clock seemed almost black. The janitors were shovelling snow, soggy and

leaned against the window frame and whistled on a high thin note. His fingers turned the pages
of a glossy, brightly coloured foreign magazine, but his eyes saw nothing. The counsellor was
tall and thin, wearing a suit of the smooth material. He looked more like a rich young man about
town than a responsible member of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
