2. Rita was studying reaction of metals with water, she observed that on reaction of metals and water
some time metal oxide is formed where as some time metal hydroxide is formed. She got very confused.
Can you help her to clear her doubt? Explain taking example of zinc. Write balanced chemical reactions
for the same.

Answer:In general the reactions of metals with water produce hydrogen gas (H 2 ) and the hydroxides of the metals. Metals with moderate to low reactivity react very slowly with water. However, they react moderately with steam when heated and give hydrogen gas and metal oxides.

Answer:

Metals like sodium, potassium and calcium are highly reactive and when react with water(even with cold water) produces metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas. On the other hand, comparatively less reactive metals like mg, al, zn, fe react with water(boiling water or steam) and produce metal oxides and hydrogen gas.

Eg.

Zn + H2O = ZnO + H2

( here the reactants are heated above 300°C)
