Volcanoes are some of the hottest (and coolest) things on the face of the Earth, but not all volcanoes are alike – and not all are like what you see in the movies.

1.1 What is a volcano anyway?
1.2 Why does magma rise to the surface?
1.3 Stratovolcano
1.4 Cinder Cone Volcano
1.5 Shield Volcanoes
The three main types of volcanoes are:
Stratovolcano — a conical volcano consisting of layers of solid lava flows mixed with layers of other rock.
cinder cone.
Cinder cone volcano — doesn’t have any horizontal layers, and is instead a steep conical hill of tephra (volcanic debris) that accumulates around and downwind from the vent.
shield volcano — a type of volcano built entirely or mostly from fluid lava vents. They are named like this because when viewed from above, you can see just how massive and imposing they are – like a warrior’s shield.
Answer:
Geologists generally group volcanoes into four main kinds--cinder cones, composite volcanoes, shield volcanoes, and lava domes.
How to identify : -
There are three main types of volcano - composite or strato, shield and dome. Composite volcanoes, sometimes known as strato volcanoes, are steep sided cones formed from layers of ash and [lava] flows. The eruptions from these volcanoes may be a pyroclastic flow rather than a flow of lava.
Comparison : -
Size Differences
Cinder cone volcanoes are relatively small, rarely exceeding 1,000 feet tall. Composite volcanoes, also known as stratovolcanoes, are towering structures, often rising more than 10,000 feet. Shield volcanoes are broad, typically 20 times wider than they are high.
