Inertia is of three types namely:

(a) Inertia of rest.

(b) Inertia of motion

(c) Inertia of direction.

(a) INERTIA OF REST: It is the tendency of an object to remain at rest until or unless some external force is applied on it.

- A person who is sitting in a car goes backward when the car suddenly starts moving.

- This is because the lower portion starts moving which is in contact with the car but the upper portion tends to remain in rest due to inertia of rest.

(b) INERTIA OF MOTION: It is the tendency of an object to move in same direction with constant velocity.

- A person who is sitting in a car goes forward when the car suddenly stops.

- This is because the lower portion stops moving which is in contact with the car but the upper portion tends to remain in motion due to inertia of motion.
