Question :-

  • 2 subtracted from 1/4th of a number gives 1. Find the number.

Answer :-

  • The number is 12.

To find :-

  • The number.

Solution :-

  • Let the number be "x".

Then :-

  • \sf \dfrac{1}{4} \: th \: of \: the \: number = \dfrac{1}{4} x

It is given that :-

  • 2 subtracted from 1/4th of a number gives 1.

Therefore,

 : \longmapsto \tt\dfrac{1}{4} x - 2 = 1

: \longmapsto \tt\dfrac{x}{4} - 2 = 1

 : \longmapsto\tt \dfrac{x \times 1 - 2 \times 4}{4} = 1

  : \longmapsto\tt\dfrac{x - 8}{4} = 1

 : \longmapsto\tt x - 8 = 1 \times 4

 : \longmapsto\tt x - 8 = 4

 : \longmapsto\tt x = 4 + 8

 : \longmapsto\tt x = 12

 \\

Hence :-

  • The number is 12.

V E R I F I C A T I O N

  • To check our answer, let's put 12 in the place of x and see whether LHS = RHS.

LHS

 \hookrightarrow\bf \dfrac{1}{4} \times 12 - 2

 \hookrightarrow \bf\dfrac{1}{1} \times 3 - 2

 \hookrightarrow\bf1 \times 3 - 2

 \hookrightarrow\bf3 - 2

 \hookrightarrow\bf1

RHS

 \hookrightarrow\bf1

 \\

LHS = RHS.

Hence verified!
