2. Tell whether each of the following properties describes a homogeneous mixture, a solution, a
heterogeneous mixture, a compound or an element. (i) A homogeneous liquid which leaves a solid
residue on boiling. (ii) A cloudy liquid which after some time appears more cloudy towards the
bottom. (ii) A colourless liquid which boils at a definite temperature and can be decomposed into
simpler substances.

Explanation:

When solute particles are present uniformly into the solvent then it is known as a homogeneous mixture.

For example, salt dissolved in water. is a homogeneous mixture and when we boil it then a residue will remain after all the water has been evaporated.

This residue is the salt that was being added to the water.

When solute particles are unevenly distributed into the solvent then it is known as a heterogeneous solution.

For example, sand in water.

Solute in a heterogeneous mixture can be separated out by filtration method. And, particles of solute start to settle at the bottom after after sometime in a heterogeneous mixture.

A compound is defined as the substance in which different elements are chemically combined together in a fixed ratio by mass.

For example, NaCl is a compound and elements are present in 1:1 ratio.

A compound can be divided into its constituent or simpler substances.

An element is a substance which contains only atoms of one type and it cannot be divided into simpler substances.

Therefore, we can conclude that given options are classified on the bases of above properties as follows.

(i) A homogeneous liquid which leaves a solid  residue on boiling - homogeneous mixture.

(ii) A cloudy liquid which after some time appears more cloudy towards the  bottom - heterogeneous mixture.

(iii) A colorless liquid which boils at a definite temperature and can be decomposed into  simpler substances - compound.
