1. Because it is the source of his livelihood.

2. Means what may be thrown by hand toward the westward horizon, where sea meets sky.

It is a reference to the fluidity of the environment, with ebb & flow of waves, as much as the currents of time, of life having its own pulse according to any given perceived, frozen moment.

3. He was talking about her past .
