2. These antelopes are on the verge of extinction. They were once found in abundance in Western Europe. They move in huge herds that number 100,000, especially after the calves are born. They have a short stature with round bodies. The most interesting part is the huge inflatable humped nose which is active throughout the year, filtering out airborne dust during summer and heating the air before it reaches the lungs during the icy cold winter. Their body is covered with a cinnamon-buff, thin summer coat of hair and a thick white coat that protects them in winters. They are hunted mainly for their horns, which are used in Chinese traditional medicines. Only males have horns. Habitat loss and hunting are major factors behind the dwindling number of this unique species of antelopes.
