Given : Three resistors R1 = 30 Ω, R2 =160 Ω, and R3 = 40 Ω are connected in series across a generator.
A voltmeter connected across R2 reads 85 V,
To Find : the voltage of the generator
Solution:
resistors R1 = 30 Ω, R2 =160 Ω, and R3 = 40 Ω are connected in series
Hence total Resistance = 30 + 160 + 40 = 230 Ω
Current in Series will be same = I
Voltage = Current * Resistance
V = IR
Voltage across R2 reads 85 V
=> 85 = I ( 160)
=> I = 85/160
=> I = 17/32 A
Voltage of generator = Current * Total Resistance
= I * 230
= (17/32) * 230
= 122.1875 V
voltage of the generator = 122.1875 V
