Earth rotates once in about 24 hours with respect to the Sun and we call that a solar day, but because we also revolve around the Sun, we need to rotate more than 360 degrees to accomplish this (360.9856° per solar day).

We rotate 360 degrees in 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4 seconds, and during the remaining 3 minutes and 56 seconds we complete our day.

That gives approximately 366.25 rotations per year (and not 365.25)

You can compare this to “Around the World in Eighty Days” where a day was won by going around the earth. In our case 1 rotation was won by going around the Sun. We count 365.25 days by doing 366.25 rotations around our axis. The difference is the 1 rotation we do around the sun.
