The following reasons given by the Author were:
1.) To get light and warmth while being in the sunshine.

Answer :

In the short story 'When The Trees Walked' by Ruskin Bond, the author gives these two reasons for the plant moving towards grandfather :

1. It needed more warmth in the sunlight.

2. It wanted to be near grandfather, who had planted it.

The following lines from the story provide the answer :

'There is probably a scientific explanation for the plant’s behaviour – something to  do with light and warmth perhaps – but I liked to think it moved across the steps simply  because it wanted to be near Grandfather.'
