the equator is used as line of reference to locate places in the north and south direction we need another line or point as a reference to locate places in the East and West direction we can draw a set of lines joining the north pole with the South Pole this lines are called meridians or lines of longitude..
The importantof longitude are- the length of all medians is the same as each one is a semicircle any two opposite median when taken together form a complete circle which is great circle the maximum distance between any two medians is at the equator which is about 111 kilometre for 1 Degree of longitude the distance between any two meridians decreases as we go away from the equator towards the poles.All the meridians meet at the pool..
