Answer:

When the instrument's gears and the instrument itself undergoes wear and tear which results in a slight error in the measurements. The backlash mainly occurs in the screw gauge where if the screw gauge on turning repeatedly after the zero mark creates a click sound and this after years of use results in the wear and tear of the gears which causes backlash error.

We can reduce it by carefully handling the instruments and do not repeatedly rotate the knob after the zero mark. One click for the end point is enough for observation.
