James mill divided the Indian history into hindu,Muslim and British period because he wanted to add the main characteristics of the period. Most of the rulers were hindu and muslim and the modern period consisted of British. So he periodised into these three periods.

He divided Indian history into three periods—Hindu, Muslim and British. It has been argued by many historians that it is not correct to periodise Indian history on the basis of religion of the rulers. For example, when the Hindu kings ruled in ancient India, many religions existed peacefully.

It was not accepted by Indian historians because it did not provide a complete view on everyone. James Mill divided Indian history into three parts: Hindu, Muslim and British. This periodisation does not help use understand the lives of other minority.
