2. When filled with dry hydrogen gas at a pressure of 1 atmosphere, a weather balloon inflates to a volume
of 175 thes. The balloon rises to a height of 2150 metres, where the atmospheric pressure is 0.800 atm
Calculate the volume of the balloon at this height is the temperature is kept constant
(218.75 litres)

Answer:

If temperature is const. then PV=const for a closed system(isothermal process)

then P1V1=P2V2

1×175=.8×V2

V2=218.75

Initial condition Final condition

V1 = 175 litres V2 = ?

P1 = 1 atm P2 = 0.800 atm

Since, the temperature is constant

Applying Boyle's law

P1 V1 = P2 V2

V2=P1 V1/P2 = 1×175×1000/0.800 = 1750/8 = 218.75(Ans)
