This is the story "Mr. Tallent's Ghost" written by Mary Webb.

  • The first narrator met Mr. Tallent in 1906 in the late summer, in a small lonely inn at the top of a mountain.
  • The narrator saw him hastening down a long road that had no side streets leading out of it.
  • Although Mr. Tallent was not a good writer after his death he expected Mr. Johnson who was a journalist to read a boxful of his manuscripts left behind and decide which one was worth publishing.
