The great plains/ indo-gangetic plains are densely populated because:-

1) More than half of the population of India depends upon agriculture and the plains are the best fertile area where agriculture is possible.

2) It is a flat and even land so construction of buildings is easy.

3) Water is easily available because of rivers flowing like Ganga and it's tributaries.

The Northern Plains of India are densely populated due to the fine alluvium deposits which makes the plain very fertile. Hence,many farmers prefer to settle here, people also settle here as it is the best land form to settle on and it has the most facilities like transportation, communication etc.
