Due to its strategic position, Kanauj became a centre of trade and commerce. The high fertility of soil encouraged agricultural growth. Therefore, the new kingdoms of this period wanted to control Kanauj.

Also there was a big struggle between the Gurjara- Pratiharas of Malwa, the Palas of Bengal and the Rashtrakutas of Deccan to establish their supermacy over Kanauj. This event is described by the historians as the Tripartite Struggle.
