In respiration, glucose undergoes slow combustion by combining with oxygen to form carbon dioxide, water and energy. Apart from other functions, this maintains our body heat. Due to this production of energy, respiration is considered an exothermic reaction.

Respiration is considered as an exothermic reaction because in respiration oxidation of glucose takes place which produces large amount of heat energy.

C6H12O6 (aq) + 6O2 (g) → 6CO2 (g) + 6H2O (l) + Energy
