The old man would not go to the same pub twice in order to be safe. He was actually an umbrella thief who stole people's umbrellas from pubs. After selling the stolen umbrellas to innocent people by making excuses, he would go to different pubs to enjoy drinks. While coming out of the pub, he would steal umbrellas from the umbrella stand.
