Answer:

Acids :

  • All acids have hydrogen has their constituent element in the form of proton.

  • Examples : Hydrochloric Acid, Sulphuric Acid and nitric acid.

  • Acids can be classified depending on their sources (organic acids and inorganic acids) and depending on their basicity (monobasic acids, dibasic acids and tribasic acids).

Bases:

  • All bases have either metallic oxide or metallic Hydroxide or Ammonia solution.

  • Examples : Sodium hydroxide, copper oxide and ammonium hydroxide.

  • Bases Can be classified on the basis of their strength (a strong alkali and a weak alkali) and on the basis of their acidity (monoacidic base , diacidic base and triacidic base).

Explanation:

Acid can be identified by their sour taste and bases by Soapy touch and bitter taste.

Salt is a product formed by a combination of acids and bases.

But all acids and bases are not tasted or touched as some of them may harm the body.

Acids and bases are differentiated by indicators.

Question:

Write two differences between acids and base.

Answer:

(4 points)

_____________________

  • Acids are sour in taste.

  • Bases are bitter in taste.

_____________________

  • Acids are soluble in water.

  • Bases may or may not be soluble in water. Bases that dissolve in water are called alkalis, e.g., sodium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide.

______________________

  • Acids are not soapy in touch.

  • Bases are soapy in touch.

_____________________

  • Acids turn blue litmus paper red.

  • Bases turn red litmus paper blue.

Additional information:

  • On the basis of chemical nature, substances are grouped as acidic, basic and neutral substances.

  • Acids are the substances that are sour to tastes and corrosive in nature.

  • Acids are generally divide into 2 types-
  1. Mineral acids are those acids that derive from inorganic compounds. Ex- Sulphuric acid, nitric acid, hydrochloric acid etc.
  2. Organic acids are those acids that derive from the plants and animals or we cab say that from organic compounds. Ex- Malic acid in apple, Acetic acid in vinegar, Formic acid in ants etc.

  • Bases are those substances which are bitter in taste and soapy to touch.

  • Few examples of bases are -:
  1. Sodium hydroxide found in soap.
  2. Potassium hydroxide found in soap.
  3. Calcium hydroxide found in lime water.

  • Neutral substances are those which are neither acidic nor basic in nature. Ex - sugar, glucose, distilled water are neutral substances.
