in an A.P. of three terms , the arithmetic mean of middle term is the sum of other two terms divided by 2
therefore
x-1 = 4+2/2
x-1 = 3
x = 4

common difference = ?
2nd term - 1st term = 3rd term - 2nd term [since common difference is equal]
(x-1) -2 = 4 - (x-1)
x - 3 = 4 - x + 1
x - 3 = 5 - x
2x = 8
x = 4
