Goddess Durga and Pandemic :

माँ हो माँ का अवतार हो तुम ,

इस जीवन के निर्माण का आधार हो तुम.

बहन हो , बेटी हो , हर कुल की रक्षक ,

कभी लक्ष्मी, कभी सरस्वती ,

कभी दुर्गा का अवतार हो तुम |

Maa Durga represents the ability to confront our fears , go to battle with our ego , and stand more upright in worthiness , beauty and wisdom . She is an exquisite warrior goddess : primal , sensual , instinctual , and the fierce . She is the divine feminine . On the festival of Navratri she is worshipped in nine avatars . Shailputri , Brahmacharini , Chandraghanta , Kushmanda , Skandamata , Katyayini , Kaalratri , Mahagauri and Siddhidatri . She is the power of consciousness and a spiritual force . She removes the evil forces that plague us , the forces of duality , conflict , division and egoism that our mortal world abides in . In the year of pandemic of Corona virus we all should take lessons from her . Some of them are never fear from any evil power , gender doesn't matters girls can do wonders as well , we need to find a durga in ourselves , Spirit of our sould should be kept alive , Know your inner strength , you are never too weak to defeat the wrong . The youth of our nation needs to study our culture and why we celebrate certain festivals like Navaratri . It conveys a deep message in itself . Nav means nine and ratri means night all together it means nine nights of nine avatars of maa Durga . We need to worship Maa in this current situation and surely she will help us get out of it . Praying from pure heart and inner soul would help us defeat the evil ( corona virus ) and live a life of freedom and a happy life again as before 2020 . But this is not only a task of someone , it is for everyone and anyone if puts efforts can save and protect many . May Maa Durga bless all and shield us in this pandemic .

Answer:

Although, to Bengalis, the arrival of Goddess Durga (which coincides with the last five days of Navratri) symbolises the annual return of the married daughter along with her children to her parental home for a holiday, she is worshipped in her demon-slaying pose. Balancing on her mount, the lion, the 10-handed goddess drives the spear into the heart of Mahishasura (the Buffalo Demon), the latter representing all that is evil. According to artisans of Kumortuli (the neighbourhood where most of the Durga idols are made in Kolkata), this year they have received several requests for replacing Mahishasura with ‘coronasura’ (or the Corona Demon).

Using the symbolic image of the COVID-19 virus, which has been doing the rounds of the media since the pandemic struck, they sculpted the head of the otherwise traditionally depicted demon for the special requests.

While the concept of ‘coronasura’ may seem bizarre, even frivolous to many, it is not strange for the pandemic as a theme to find an expression during Durga Puja in Kolkata. The neighbourhood Durga Pujas organised in Kolkata are known for their exploration of various themes, from fictional to contemporary, of drawing inspiration from traditional art and craft, of using different kinds of material to construct the marquees and for interior décor, all contributing to the cosmopolitan nature of the annual festival.
