2 ( x + 4 ) = 12

Transposing 2 to RHS

x + 4 = 12/2

x + 4 = 6

Transposing 4 to RHS

x = 6 - 4

x = 2

or

2 ( x + 4 ) = 12

Opening the brackets

2x + 8 = 12

Transposing 8 to RHS

2x = 12 - 8

2x = 4

Transposing 2 to RHS

x = 4/2

x = 2
