Answer: x=8 , y=4

Step-by-step explanation:

Taking (2x +4)/5 = y

2x + 4 = 5y

2x - 5y = 4 ....(eq 1)

Taking (40 - 3x)/4 = y

3x + 4y = 40....(eq 2)

Writing the equations in matrix form,

2 -5 X = -4

3 4 Y 40

(A) (X ) (C)

AX=C

X=A ^-1 C....(eq3)

|A| = 2×4 + 5×3 =23

So A^-1 exists.

Now,

A^-1 = (1/|A|)× Adj.A

= (1/23)× 4 5

-3 2

From eq 3,

X = (1/23)× 4 5 × -4

-3 2 40

= (1/23)× -16+200

12+80

= 184/23

92/23

= 8

4

Therefore, X=8 and Y=4.
