Solution:

Given Equation,

→ x² + x - 20 = 0

By splitting the middle term, we get,

→ x² - 4x + 5x - 20 = 0

Taking x as common from first two terms, we get,

→ x(x - 4) + 5x - 20 = 0

Taking 5 as common from last two terms, we get,

→ x(x - 4) + 5(x - 4) = 0

Taking (x - 4) as common, we get,

→ (x - 4)(x + 5) = 0

So, either (x - 4) = 0 or (x + 5) = 0,

→ x = 4, -5 which is our required answer.

Answer:

  • x = 4, -5
