Correct question.

2 years ago a father was 5 times as old as his

son , 2 years later his son will be 8 years more

than three times the age of son. Find their

present ages.

EXPLANATION.

To find present ages.

according to the question,

Let the age of father = x years.

Let the age of son = y years.

Two years ago,

age of father = ( x - 2 ) years.

age of son = ( y - 2 ) years.

Two years later,

age of father = ( x + 2 ) years.

age of son = ( y + 2 ) years.

According to the condition.

Case = 1

=> x - 2 = 5 ( y - 2 )

=> x - 2 = 5y - 10

=> x - 5y = -8 .....(1)

Case = 2

=> x + 2 = 3 ( y + 2 ) + 8

=> x + 2 = 3y + 6 + 8

=> x - 3y = 12 ...... (2)

From equation (1) and (2) we get,

=> - 2y = -20

=> y = 10

put the value of y = 10 in equation (2)

we get,

=> x - 30 = 12

=> x = 42

Therefore,

present age of father = 42 years.

present age of son = 10 years.
