It was late autumn when we finally returned from the month-long family holiday. I dropped the heavy rucksack on the ground the moment we exited the lift, stretching out my still-stiff limbs from the three-hour-long car drive I'd just endured. As Ma fished around her coat pocket for a key that never seemed to be where she first checked, Mai and I played a few rounds of rock-paper-scissors — which, of course, I won; being the superior sibling and all. As we entered the house, I was surprised at the cool air that hit my face — had we left the fan on? No, I didn't think so.
And then I saw it — the third window on the left side was open!
That window was never open. Ma had once said that if we opened it, thieves and burglars and bad people would climb in! I looked at my little sister's face, which reflected the shock I felt inside.
Ma and Da had both stopped to stare at the open window as well, and I was certain that they knew how to fix this apparent mess.
Mai moved first. For some reason, the youngest — and generally, the most scared — person currently in our flat was feeling rather brave, if her expression really meant anything. As she gently pulled the window shut, we heard a soft creak from — the kitchen!
Ma looked like she was about to have a stroke. In all my eleven years, I was certain that she'd never looked so pale.
From the kitchen, a tiny black crow — raven? — waddled out, seemingly out of place against the sterile white floors and walls.
"Caw!" it cawed, before taking wing and disappearing through the closed window.
Weird.
