14. A magnesium ribbon is burnt in oxygen to give a white compound X accompanied b
emission of light. If the burning ribbon is now placed in an atmosphere of nitrogen
continues to burn and forms a compound Y
(a) Write chemical formulae of compounds X and Y.
(b) Write a balanced equation when X is added to hot water.​

Answer:

(a) 2Mg + O₂  ---> 2MgO

Compound X ==> MgO  [ Magnesium Oxide ]

Compound Y ==> Mg₃N₂  [ Magnesium Nitride ]

(b) now, if "X" , that is , Magnesium Oxide is dissolved in water , the product is Magnesium Hydroxide 

MgO  + H₂O ---> Mg(OH)₂

This equation is already balanced !!
