The poem deals with the inequalities in class and the social justice that is prevalent in our society.

  • In the poem the plight of poor and under-privileged chldren is highlighted. It explains the miserable condition of the slum, and how the school in which they study is all gray and in poor condition.
  • The poet has expressed this irony by suggesting that when these children read, they just run their tongues haywire into books as they do not understand the meaning of the words.
  • They also blankly pronounce the sentences and fail to grasp the real educational message found in the books.
  • The poet appeals to the authoritative people to save these marginalized children from their meager lives of despair and misery and wants to emancipate the imprisoned minds into a new world of joy and independence.
