The answer is 1,504 grams of NaOH

GIVEN

Caustic soda NaOH can be commercially prepared by the reaction of Na₂CO₃with slaked lime Ca(OH)₂ .

TO FIND

How many grams of NaOH can be obtained treating 2.0 kg of Na₂CO₃ with Ca(OH)₂ ?

SOLUTION

We can simply solve the above problem as follows;

Mass of Na₂CO₃ = 2kg = 2000 grams

The reaction can be depicted as follows;

Na₂CO₃ + Ca(OH)₂ -------------> 2NaOH

Fron the reaction we can say that,

1 mole of Na₂CO₃ given 2 moles of NaOH

106 grams of Na₂CO₃ = 1 mol

2000 grams of Na₂CO₃ = 2000/106 = 18.8 mol

Number of moles of NaOH produced by 18.8 moles of Na₂CO₃ = 2 × 18.8 = 37.6 mol

Now,

1 mole of NaOH = 40 grams

37.6 grams of NaOH = 40 × 37.6 = 1,504 grams.

Hence, The answer is 1,504 grams of NaOH
