GIVEN,

20% of boys were absent, 180 were absent.

TO FIND,

the number of boys in the school.

SOLUTION,

LET THE TOTAL NUMBER OF BOYS BE 'X'

as we know 20% are absent,

we get,

ABSENT= 20% OF X

             = \frac{20}{100} * X

             =\frac{20}{100} X

NOW ACCORDING TO THE PROBLEM,

\frac{20}{100} X = 180

since it is given in the problem that 20% were absent and                                     180 were absent.

solving the equation we get,

20x=18000\\\\x=900

HENCE THE TOTAL NUMBER OF STUDENTS IN THE SCHOOL WAS 900.

Amount of boys absent

20% or 180

20% x 5 = 100%

so 180 x 5 = 900

Amount of students

900

Amount of absents

180 or 20%

Amount of presents

900 - 180 = 720
