Do you know who invented the telephone? Do you know the principle by which it operates? Before the
invention of the telephone several scientists, including Edison, were racing to produce devices that would
transmit sound waves. Naturally, only a few people took them seriously. But the one who came a little
ahead of the rest was the Scotsman Alexander Graham Bell.
Bell was born in Edinburgh in 1847. As a young man he moved to Boston where he taught at a school for
the deaf. Here he also engaged in studying electricity, the ear function and speech sound qualities. He
also examined with a device that would enable the deaf to hear. While doing this, he came across the
basic principle of the telephone completely by chance. He noticed that if the intensity of an electric
current could be made to vary exactly as the density of the air varies, during the production of the sound,
then it should be possible to transmit speech by wire.
