Explanation:

In general terms pucca would mean ripe and kutcha would mean unripe or tender. In the present context of houses, it would mean long lasting houses (pucca) and not-so-long-lasting houses (kutcha), Traditionally houses were made kutcha by design, so that generations of people could alter it easily. Tearing down a kutcha houses was easier (there are still some houses in Kerala that are in existence for centuries). Also, the kutcha houses were not expensive and the traditional designs ensured that in case of natural calamities like floods or earth quakes, kutcha houses caused lesser damage to life and rebuilding was easier. Kutcha houses had mud walls supported with wooden beams and slanting roofs made of tiles. Depending on the nature of terrain and climate, only locally grown/available materials were used like sun burnt bricks or mud or bamboo. This construction also kept the houses cool in hot Indian summer and warmer during winter. Kutcha houses did not mean that our people did not know how to build structures that could last. They used granite or stone for structures that they needed to last like temples and other public structures like temple pond/check dams. We know our temples have lasted for centuries without any known perceptible degradation over the centuries. The so-called modern pucca houses were built of extremely energy intensive materials like cement, steel and glass. Laury Baker had studied and reinvented the traditional system of Indian way of house construction that was low cost, incorporated the traditional system of house construction, and architecturally pleasing as well. Kutcha that was pucca :-)
