I recommend death note or Steins;gate as the first anime because they are both very short, linear and have a single focus plot. They are both very smart and have good dubs too, so you can just watch the dub and get a good experience for your first anime. Some episodic animes of similar length like Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bepop are good to pick up afterwards too.
