It takes place in three steps,

Initiation: involves the formation of radicals(an atom with an unpaired electron) because of various external factors

Propagation: It involves the reaction of radicals with atmospheric oxygen which leads to the formation of peroxides.

These peroxides give rise to more and more radicals.

Termination:  When two radicals combine, they give rise to end products that are aldehydes and ketones.
