Answer:

The volume of M/4 HCl, V1 = 200 ml

Let the volume of M/10 HCl be “V2”, the Molar mass of M/4 HCl be “M1”=M/4  and the molar mass of M/10 HCl be “M2”=M/10.

We know that, the volume of M/10 HCl is obtained by diluting or adding some amount of water in the M/4 HCl.  

So, let V2 = Volume of water needed(Vw) + V1 …… (i)

Using the equation,

M1 * V1 = M2 * V2

Or, M1 * V1 = M2 * (Vw + V1)

Substituting the given values  

∴ M/4 * 200 = M/10 * (Vw+200)

Or, Vw + 200 = 500

Or, Vw = 500 -200 = 300 ml

Hence, the volume of H₂O needed for dilution is 300ml.
