21. The refractive indices of turpentine oil, kerosene and alcohol are 1.7, 1.44 and 1.36 respectively.
On the basis of this information complete the following ray diagram to show the path of light
through each medium. (Give reason for your answer).

We know, when light passes from rarer to denser, it bends towards the normal.

And when light passes through denser to rarer, it bends away from the normal.

So, the pic 2 and 3 attached shoes your answer.

Now, in the first one light bends towards the normal because it passes from a rarer medium to the denser medium.

In the second one light bends away from the normal because it passes from a denser medium to the rarer medium.

What is refractive index ?

Itis the physical quantity that shows the speed of propagation of light in different media.

It does not have any SI unit.

Refractive index n can can be written as the speed of light in medium 1 to the speed of light in medium to or the speed of light in medium 2 to the speed of light in medium 1.

It can also be written as speed of light in air or vacuum to the speed of light in the medium.
