Answer:

According to David Easton, the usefulness of pre 19th century normative political theory (values based political theory) has now declined significantly.

Following are the four reasons for the decline of political theory according to David Easton  -

1. Historicism

Research into previous political theories has been limited to ancient political ideas. They have dedicated themselves entirely to confronting the conventional values of the past. According to Easton, the class of political scientists has spent more time on emphasizing the political ideologies of the past. There was a lack of interest among them in developing and interpreting new teachings.

2. Moral Relativism

David Easton speaks of the exclusion of the value of political theory. In the mid 20th century, the empirical science approach was adopted to make political science a science. However, Easton is not in favor of  avoiding the value discussion altogether. In his opinion, it is necessary to build a value system with a sensitive attitude towards the important problems of society.

3. Confusion Between Science and Theory/ Crazy About Science

One of the reasons for the decline of political theory is the over reliance on scientific methods to raise political science to the level of science. The conventional wisdom is that science and theory are synonymous. This is why Easton speaks of gathering information based on theoretical hypotheses. There is no guarantee that a theory can be developed through research when a scientific method is applied to a subject.

4. Hyperfactualism

According to David Easton, political science has long been obsessed with facts and information. The influence of this trend can also be seen in the political science discussion of the 20th century.
