Given - Volume of iron block - 10cm x 20cm X 5cm

Change in temperature - 100° C to 400° C

co-efficient of linear expansion of iron =1.2X10-5 / °C

Find - Change in volume of iron block.

Solution - The change in volume on expansion can be calculated by the formula - ∆V = 3*alpha*V*∆T. In the formula, ∆V is change in volume, alpha is coefficient of linear expansion, V is original volume and ∆T is change in temperature.

Keeping the values in equation-

∆V = 3*1.2*10-⁵*10*20*5*(400-100)

∆V = 1.08 cm³

Thus, change in volume of iron block is 1.08 cm³.
