No, it is not possible to change a particular character or trait in a multicellular organism by changingthe gene for that character or trait in one of its cells.

  • The numerous cell types in a multicellular organism differ extremely in both structure and function. The gene for the character or trait will require to be altered in all the cells of the organism unless the alteration exists in a pluripotent cell which is a cell apt of dividing and forming all the numerous types of cells.
  • Many specialized cells in a multicellular organism are capable of differing their patterns of gene expression in response to extra-cellular signals.
  • If alterations are rendered in a pluripotent cell for example cells of the zygote then the trait will uphold all the differentiated cells of the organism as the organism will develop and thus, the specific character can be changed.
