22. Anil is a kind, simple and easy-going young man. He is tall and lean stature and has interest in sports like wrestling. He is not very rich and cannot offer to employ Had as a cook. He has the patience and goodness to not only teach Had to cook but also to read, write and add numbers. Though he knows about Hari’s stealing of little bits of money from the groceries, he ignores this fact.

Anil is a writer who writes for magazines and makes money in fits and starts. He is a very trusting person. Even when he earns a large amount of money, he keeps the money under his mattress and not in a safe box.

Anil is generous enough to pay Hari a certain portion of the money which Hari tried to steal from him earlier. He has a forgiving nature and forgives Had of his theft without letting him know of his discovery. He continues to be a good man to Hari.

A Question of Trust by Victor Canning  is a story about a man named Horace Danby who used to build locks and he used to commit robberies every year. Once, when he goes to a house for robbery, he meets a woman who pretends to be the owner of the house. Later when he leaves from there and is arrested after 2-3 days, he comes to know the that the lady was thief and had tricked him into opening the safe.

Explanation:

  • The story is about a 50-year-old man who makes locks and stays with his housekeeper He is a nice person, but not an honest man, because every year he commits a robbery. He planned his robberies so that he could purchase unusual and costly books with money from them for at least a year. Since he likes to read rare and costly books, he buys these books He's going to rob the Shotover Grange house.
  • The real twist in the story comes when he reaches the grange to commit a robbery and a woman pretending to be the wife of the owner enters.   She offers him an opportunity to forget that she had seen him trying to open the safe provided he does something for her. She  say she had forgotten the security code of the locker and she needs to go for a wedding and if Danby's cracks the safe she would allow him to go.
  • Horace Danby does not realize that he unlocks the safe for some robber because she isn't the actual owner of the property. He leaves satisfied that he is safe but does not realize he's opened the safe for someone else that too without wearing his gloves
  • Later on, as he leaves and after two or three days is arrested, he comes to learn of the lady's reality. He realizes he was tricked by a woman, who was herself a thief and with the same background as his. He is sent to the jail and becomes an assistant librarian. From then he get angry if someone talks about honour amongst thieves since he had been cheated by one from his own community
