Answer:The epiglottis is a leaf-shaped structure of cartilage located behind the tongue, at the top of the larynx. The main function of the epiglottis is to covered off the windpipe during eating, so that food is not accidentally inhaled.

trachea is a common passage for both air and food. the food travels through the oesophagus while the air passes through the larynx. as the food should not pass through the larynx the thin cartilaginous flap called epiglottis present prevents the entry of food into larynx.
